BBC called it "a five star triumph", and we agree. Here are our writer Scotty's five reasons why you need to see it:

1. THE STORY

Dunkirk tells the story of 400,000 British soldiers trapped on the coast of France trying to make the seemingly short leap across the channel to Britain with the German front snipping at their heels. The unique way the story is told with perspectives from the land, the sky and the sea with the storylines converging is impressive and immersive.

2. THE TENSION

The wide open expanses and scale Christopher Nolan has become known for (Interstellar) is cleverly contrasted with stifling situations and cramped confines. This coupled with Hans Zimmer’s gripping score will have you nibbling your fingers to nubs.

3. THE CAST

With a cast boasting the likes of Cillian Murphy, Harry Styles and Jack Lowden there isn’t a shortage of good looking things to look at if fantastic war epics aren’t your thing. Keep an eye out for newcomer Fionn Whitehead, who gets the most screen time, and Tom Hardy who, like in The Dark Knight Rises (also with Christopher Nolan) is again tragically hidden behind a mask.

4. THE REALISM

The deliberate use of minimal CGI and genuine WWII planes means you are really confronted with authenticity for all 106 minutes. The visceral experience is second to none. Every sputter from the Spitfire plane and thump of rounds hitting sand draws you right into the disparate situation that was Dunkirk beach in 1940.

5. THE KIWI WEATHER

I checked the forecast for the next 10 days and it supposedly is going to be 7 rainy cloud days, 1 sun day and 2 cloudy days. With inclement weather not going away anytime soon there is no better time to be inside a cosy theatre filled with the body heat of strangers, watching a damn good movie!
