CHOOSING NEW FURNITURE - WHEN TO SPLURGE & WHEN TO SAVE

Lifestyle

06 June 2017

Shopping for new furniture can be extremely rewarding and a little bit daunting (especially when you're sticking to a budget) so with budgets in mind we've come up with a few ideas to help you know when to splurge and when to save!

THE BEDROOM

1. Splurge on a good night's sleep, save when decorating

A good night’s sleep is priceless so invest as best you can on a great quality mattress and superior bed linen. Look for cotton sheets with a high thread-count. The initial outlay might seem expensive but all will be forgotten when you realise just how luxurious they feel to sleep in and how much wear you’ll get out of them. When it comes to your duvet cover, shop the sales to get a colourful bedspread at a great price.

A. Adagio Euro top mattress $1299 from The Bedshop | b. Cannon Maia Duvet Cover Set $56.00 to $68.00* from Briscoes | c. 610TC 100% cotton sheet set by Top $339.99 from Harvey Norman

THE DINING ROOM

2/ Splurge on statement lighting and furniture, save on your seating

Saving on your dining room seating doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality. A dining table and statement lighting are large, impactful pieces that are less likely to change. A solid wood table for instance, can be restored several times over many years while chairs can be a little more fun and less fixed, changing as your tastes change and as budget allows.

d. Replica Viento chair $179 (buy one get one free*) from Nood | e. Chelsea 6 Light Pendant $133.35* from Lighting Plus | f. Sakata dining table $1699.00 from Nood

THE LIVING ROOM

3/ Splurge on high-use items, save on your accessories

High-use items like rugs and sofas are being walked on and sat upon several times a day so it makes sense to invest your money here. Good quality leather (for sofas), jute (for rugs) and even velvet (for chairs) are not only more durable but fairly stain-resistant and easier to maintain than a lot of others which makes them perfect for the busy household or growing family.  Add colour and texture with throws, cushions and table lamps as these can be easily updated without breaking the bank!
