WHY YOU NEED TO TRY BETTER BURGER

It’s called Better Burger for a reason. Sylvia Park’s newest food spot in the dining lane is proving to be popular and it’s easy to see why.

Dubbed by nzherald.co.nz as “Auckland’s answer to America’s In N Out burger chain”, Better Burger’s been a ‘hole in the wall’ on the fast food scene for only a couple of years, but steadily growing in size and popularity.

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of paying through the roof for average burgers. If you’ve got your heart set on frozen, dry patties, brown, wilted lettuce and stale buns for the price of an Auckland house deposit, then Better Burger isn’t the place for you.

A TRUE CLASSIC

The BB team make their patties fresh every day with NZ Angus beef brisket, pickle their own pickles, hand make this sublime secret sauce and have local bakers create their honey burger buns. My anaconda don’t want none unless you got honey buns! With the only processed menu item being the cheese, you know you’re pumping your bod with the good stuff.

Like any decent hole in the wall place, a simple, short menu is key. BB has a short and sweet offer, because everything is absolutely bloody fantastic. If you need pages and pages of different burger menus to entice you to try one, then, once again, BB just isn’t for you – and in my opinion, you don’t get the ethos of a true burger joint if you can’t appreciate the classics! BB’s burgers have been carefully created with loving simplicity and are exemplary every damn time.

THE MENU

Four burgers. Hamburger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger (because why the heck not?) and a mushroom burger for the vegos. A foursome of awesome. I can unashamedly admit that I kind of ate all four in two days and as a result, am now part burger. They also have handcut crispy potato fries with the skin on, classic diner-style shakes, and old mates Coke and Sprite.

THE PRICES

What if I told you that BB’s prices are the best in town, hand on heart. Rivalling standard fast food franchises, you can pick up fries for $4, a hamburger or shake for a mere 5 bucks, a cheeseburger for $5.50 and the mushie burger’s only $6.50. Considering how fresh and good it all tastes, it feels like they shouldn’t be this cheap – whether it’s the day before pay day, or every day, you’re doing yourself (and your wallet) a solid.

THE "SECRET" MENU

The secret menu isn’t advertised on any sandwich boards or signs, but you can be assured on my excellent authority that it’s a thing. For those in the know, “epic fries from the secret menu” are a delightful surprise and they might be the best potato things that ever potatoed. Think fries with a generous swirl of sweet mustard, “secret” sauce, and topped with grilled onions. Ye-um! For a cheeky $2, you can add bacon to everything as well, and for the low-carb/non-bread eaters, you can ask the team to swap your honey bun for a wrapped lettuce “bun” instead.

Better Burger is open 11am – 10pm, 7 days a week at Sylvia Park, near Hoyts.
